City Grocery: An Oxford Staple

By June 5, 2026No Comments

After a long but productive work week, my boss and I headed to City Grocery for lunch. As one of Oxford’s most well-known dining destinations, City Grocery has been on my restaurant bucket list for quite some time, and I was excited to finally give it a try.

This sunny Friday afternoon on the Square provided the perfect setting for a lunch outing. The warm weather and lively atmosphere around downtown Oxford made the experience even more enjoyable before we ever stepped through the door.

City Grocery is also part of a larger culinary legacy in Oxford. The restaurant is led by Chef John Currence, one of the most influential figures in modern Southern cuisine. Known for elevating regional flavors with refined technique and creativity, Currence has helped shape Oxford into a true food destination.

In addition to City Grocery, his restaurant group also includes Snackbar, another standout dining spot in Oxford. Both restaurants have been recognized by the MICHELIN Guide as recommended establishments, highlighting their consistency, quality, and impact on the American South culinary scene.

Once inside, City Grocery immediately impressed us with its atmosphere. The natural light from the skylight, crisp white tablecloths, and thoughtful design details created an upscale yet comfortable environment. The attentive wait staff added to the experience, providing prompt and friendly service throughout our meal.

We started with the restaurant’s complimentary cornbread, which was a delicious way to begin lunch. I ordered water, while my boss opted for a sweet tea. According to him, it was so good he could have taken another one to go.

For our entrees, I chose the Southwestern Salad, while my boss ordered the T.B.A. (Turkey, Bacon, Avocado) sandwich with fries.

My Southwestern Salad, priced at $15, featured pickled jalapeños, black beans, corn, and avocado sauce. The combination of fresh ingredients and mild spice created a flavorful yet light lunch option. My boss’s T.B.A. sandwich, also $15, was served with a side of fries and received his full approval.

One thing we both appreciated was how quickly our food arrived. Between the excellent service, inviting atmosphere, and quality meals, City Grocery delivered a dining experience that lived up to its reputation.

Whether you’re stopping by for a business lunch, meeting friends on the Square, or simply looking to enjoy one of Oxford’s local favorites, City Grocery is a restaurant worth adding to your list.
